Air New Zealand has introduced a new measure requiring passengers to step on a weighing scale before boarding international flights.
The airline aims to weigh 10,000 passengers between May 31 and July 2 as part of a month-long survey. This initiative allows pilots to have a clearer understanding of the aircraft’s weight and balance prior to takeoff.
The decision to weigh passengers is part of Air New Zealand’s comprehensive approach to ensuring safety and efficiency. The airline spokesperson, Alastair James, emphasized that the company weighs everything that goes on board, including cargo, meals, and luggage. Previously, average weights were used for passengers, cabin bags, and airline crew. However, this survey aims to gather more accurate data to enhance safety protocols.
To address any concerns, Air New Zealand assures passengers that their participation in the survey is voluntary and completely anonymous. The individual’s weight is not visible to anyone, including airline staff. The airline understands that stepping on a scale can be intimidating, but passengers can rest assured that no visible display of their weight is present.
Air New Zealand previously conducted a similar weighing survey for domestic flights in 2021. However, due to the pandemic, the initiative for international travelers was delayed.
The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand requires airlines to collect data on the weight of everything on board, including passengers. Airlines can obtain this information through surveys, such as the one conducted by Air New Zealand, or by using a standard weight set by the authority.
Currently, the authority has set the standard weight for passengers aged 13 and above, including carry-on luggage, at 86 kg. It is worth noting that this weight was last updated in 2004, when it stood at 77 kg.
By implementing passenger weighing, Air New Zealand aims to enhance safety and maintain optimal aircraft balance. The collected data will contribute to more accurate weight calculations and ensure a smoother and safer flying experience for all passengers.
