Bunk beds in economy class : Air New Zealand’s Skynest

Air New Zealand’s Skynest, an innovative economy-class seating concept that offers bunk beds for long-haul passengers, has generated significant anticipation and interest among travelers seeking a restful sleep in the air.

The concept has now received industry recognition and validation through the esteemed Crystal Cabin Award, presented at the 2022 Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, Germany.

Skynest emerged victorious in the cabin concepts category at the prestigious ceremony, which honors groundbreaking advancements in aircraft cabin interiors. Lukas Kaestner, President of the Crystal Cabin Award Association, emphasized the significance of Air New Zealand’s win, noting that this category typically rewards imaginative ideas that are far from being realized.

Skynest is not merely a futuristic concept; it is an actual product developed by the airline and is scheduled to be introduced in 2024.

Kaestner remarked, “A bunk-bed solution for economy class is something we often encounter as a concept. However, witnessing this level of innovation materialise into a flying product is a rarity.”
