The Maltese-flagged MSC World Europa, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, suffered an electrical issue with its engines early this morning while sailing from Genoa to Naples. The incident occurred at around 7:25 am, when the vessel was located eight nautical miles southwest of the Italian island of Ponza.
Onboard were 8,585 people in total – 6,496 passengers and 2,089 crew members. Despite the sudden mechanical issue, the situation onboard remains calm and under control. Weather conditions in the area are favourable, and essential services for passengers continue to operate thanks to the ship’s emergency generators.
Response Efforts Underway
Two tugboats have been dispatched from the ports of Gioia Tauro and Naples to assist the vessel and bring it safely to Naples. In addition, technicians from the cruise line are travelling to the ship to conduct inspections and work on resolving the fault.
As a precautionary measure, patrol boats from the Ponza and Naples Coast Guards have been deployed to the site, along with an AW 139-Nemo Coast Guard helicopter scheduled to monitor the situation from the air.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Civitavecchia is overseeing operations, maintaining constant communication with the vessel and its owners.
Passengers Kept Safe
The safety and wellbeing of those onboard remain the priority. Coast Guard officials have confirmed that no emergency evacuation has been required, and passengers are continuing to receive care and services while awaiting assistance.
