Thailand is set to implement a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visa-exempt visitors. The system will launch in December 2024, with mandatory enrolment starting June 2025.
Why Is Thailand Introducing the ETA?
The ETA aims to enhance security and streamline immigration by screening visa-free travelers before arrival. This will help reduce congestion at border checkpoints and improve monitoring. The system follows models used by countries like the UK and Canada and is similar to the EU’s ETIAS program.
Who Needs to Register?
The ETA applies to visa-exempt travelers from 93 countries, including:
- Americas: USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico
- Europe: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy
- Asia: China, Japan, India, Malaysia, South Korea
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
- Middle East & Africa: UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa
Travellers must register each time they enter Thailand. However, those with a valid Thai visa (e.g., Tourist Visa) or certain diplomatic documents are exempt.
How Will the ETA Work?
- Travelers register online via the Thai E-Visa Portal before departure.
- Airlines may require proof of ETA before boarding.
- Those without an ETA can apply at the border but may be denied entry.
- Processing time is expected to be around 1 hour.
- ETA registration will be free of charge and provide a QR code for fast-track entry.
Required Documents (Subject to Change)
- Valid passport
- Flight itinerary (entry & exit details)
- Proof of accommodation in Thailand
- Proof of sufficient funds (at least 10,000 baht for solo travelers, 20,000 baht for families)
The full details of the ETA system are still being finalised, and updates will be provided closer to implementation.
