KLM to modernise long-haul fleet

KLM is embarking on a plan to modernize its aging long-haul fleet by incorporating Airbus A350 family aircraft in the coming years. Renowned for its exceptional fuel efficiency and minimal noise generation, the Airbus A350 family offers significant advantages.

These new wide-body planes bring substantial benefits in terms of reducing CO2 emissions and noise pollution. The procurement of these aircraft is contingent upon the recommendations of the KLM Works Council.

“Today marks a significant milestone for KLM. We are taking a major step toward our future by considering the acquisition of new aircraft. With the A350s, we can make our fleet significantly more environmentally friendly, quieter, and fuel-efficient. This is crucial, as we all share the formidable challenge of becoming more sustainable. Additionally, we can enhance the level of service and comfort we offer our passengers on intercontinental routes,” remarked Marjan Rintel, CEO of KLM.

Under an agreement with Airbus, the Air France KLM Group is set to acquire a total of 50 Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft, with an option for an additional 40 aircraft. The 50 aircraft have been placed on order and will be distributed between KLM and Air France based on local market dynamics and regulatory conditions. KLM anticipates the introduction of Airbus A350 on its intercontinental flights starting in 2026, thereby replacing its existing Boeing 777-200ERs, Airbus A330-200s, and Airbus A330-300s.

More sustainability and reduced noise

The introduction of the new Airbus A350 represents a significant stride in developing a greener and quieter fleet. These aircraft produce 40% less noise and consume 25% less fuel compared to older-generation counterparts. Their airframes primarily consist of reinforced, lightweight materials such as composites and titanium, allowing for longer distances to be covered with reduced fuel consumption. When combined with the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other operational advancements and efficiency improvements, these new aircraft will play a pivotal role in making KLM’s operations cleaner, quieter, and more fuel-efficient. Additionally, the Airbus A350 promises enhanced customer experience, comfort, and operational efficiency.
