The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Cape Verde, highlighting concerns about limited medical facilities across the West African island nation.
In its latest update, the Foreign Office warned that some essential medicines may be in short supply or completely unavailable on the islands, which could pose challenges for travellers requiring specific prescriptions or urgent medical care.
The largest hospitals in Cape Verde are located in Praia (Santiago) and Mindelo (São Vicente), while the rest of the country has only smaller medical facilities and clinics with limited capabilities. The warning specifically highlights that medical facilities are particularly limited on the island of Boa Vista.
Additionally, the Foreign Office stressed that the islands of Brava and Santo Antão do not have working airports, making medical air evacuation extremely difficult in case of an emergency.
Despite these concerns, Cape Verde remains a popular holiday destination, known for its year-round sunshine, stunning beaches, and relaxed atmosphere. UK tour operators, including TUI, mainly sell holidays to Sal and Boa Vista, the most tourist-friendly islands in the archipelago.
In response to growing demand, EasyJet is set to launch its first flights and package holidays to Sal from London Gatwick on 31 March, expanding access to the destination for UK travellers.
Travellers heading to Cape Verde are advised to check their medical insurance coverage, ensure they bring necessary medications, and stay informed about local healthcare facilities before their trip.
