Since the city of Manchester has a very compact layout, the best way to get around it is on foot. It’s also simple to get around by bike as there are many dedicated bicycle lanes. If you get tired, you can always hop on a Metrolink tram. There is also a free bus network, which covers most of the city center. And if you are in a rush to get somewhere, you can always depend on the city’s regulated taxis.
On foot or by bike:
The best way to experience Greater Manchester is by walking around it. Although you can’t reach everywhere in the city on foot, you can get to most of the city-center attractions very easily. And although the city isn’t laid out on a grid, you can get a good city map to keep you from getting lost. And if your feet need a break, consider renting out a bike. There are various marked bike lanes and paved cycle paths all through the city and several bike rental retailers.
Tram:
The Metrolink tram system is the most highly successful railway system in the UK. This tram network consists of seven different tracks that make around 99 stops very close to many of the city’s major entertainment areas.
The fares are calculated by the number of zones you travel through. It is important to keep in mind that you will have to choose which zone or zones you wish to travel through when you buy a ticket. Your ticket is valid only for the zones you’ve chosen, and you cannot travel through a zone for which you do not have proper access.
Single tickets are in effect for two hours. Travel cards are also available, and these may be a better idea if you are planning to use the Metrolink Tram a lot throughout your stay.
Bus:
The city’s free bus system runs three-round hop-on, hop-off paths throughout central Manchester. The bus connects the train stations with businesses and many of the city’s popular attractions. These buses run regularly about every 10 to 20 minutes from 7 in the morning to 11:30 in the night. The transport for Greater Manchester also operates various city-wide bus routes, including the ones to and from the airport. The path determines the fares for these routes.
Car:
Manchester is like any other big city so you will have to deal with constant headaches like traffic and parking if you decide to rent a car. If you do not have a vehicle but would like one, you can rent a car at the Manchester Airport, as well as from several other locations throughout the city. Just remember that the British drive on the right side of the road!
Taxi:
The taxi fares can get pricey pretty quickly. So your best bet for cutting back on expenses is to rely more on public transportation, and you can save the cab for a time when you’re in a rush to get somewhere.
